Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) – which include diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and cancer – are slow-developing conditions that take a tremendous toll on public health. NCDs are the leading cause of death globally, ending an estimated 36 million lives each year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). That’s 60 percent of all deaths. These diseases, which once were limited to the rich and elderly, are increasingly taking their toll on younger, less affluent populations.
Low- to middle-income countries have more than their share of these largely preventable deaths. Approximately 80 percent of NCD deaths happen in these countries because their lower-income citizens have limited access to NCD prevention information and health services. Increasing urbanization, greater consumption of processed and fatty foods, and decreasing physical activity also contribute to the early onset of NCDs in many of these countries.
