Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
A model of contraception outreach developed by an Abt Associates-led project in India is being adopted more broadly.
In India, 13 percent of married women have an unmet need for contraception. The Strengthening Health Outcomes through the Private Sector (SHOPS) project, led by Abt Associates and funded by USAID, is expanding family planning method choices available to women by offering DMPA, a three-month injectable contraceptive not available in the public sector, through a network of nearly 1,200 private sector clinics.
A challenge with DMPA has been high discontinuation rates of the injectable — reportedly due to side effects such as heavy menstrual bleeding.
