The Graduate Teaching Fellows GK-12 Education (GK-12) Program is designed to improve graduate students’ communication, teaching, collaboration, and teamwork skills; provide professional development opportunities to K-12 teachers; enrich the learning of K-12 students; and foster stronger partnerships between institutions of higher education (IHE’s) and local school districts. The program uses grants to IHEs to fund STEM graduate students to achieve their goals through fellowships. Abt conducted an evaluation in 2006 to provide data on the experiences of GK-12 fellows and to compare them to those of other graduate students in the same departments. It also examined outcomes for K-12 teachers who participated in the program. Findings from this study provided the National Science Foundation with essential information to guide its decisions on the direction of the GK-12 program.
