Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
As the world’s newest nation, South Sudan faces serious food security issues. More than 25 years of conflict have destroyed much of the country’s agricultural production capacity, making it highly dependent on food imports from other countries in the region, such as Uganda and Kenya. Through the USAID-funded Food, Agribusiness and Rural Markets (FARM) Project, Abt Associates is helping South Sudan to rapidly increase agricultural productivity in selected commodities, increase trade and improve its capacity to develop commercial smallholder agriculture. The FARM Project is initially focusing on four staple crops: maize, sorghum, cassava and groundnuts. The project is working in the three Greenbelt states of West, Central, and East Equatoria—areas of great agricultural potential.
