Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
Tuboreshe Chakula (Swahili for Let’s Improve Food) was a USAID-funded, Abt Associates-implemented Feed the Future project which sought to transform Tanzania’s agro-processing industry and increase the supply of and demand for safe, high-quality and nutritious foods, especially among vulnerable populations in the food-insecure regions of Tanzania: Morogoro, Dodoma, Manyara and both islands of Zanzibar. It was implemented from 2011 to 2015.
The project focused on fortification and marketing in five supply chains — maize, sunflower oil, rice, and blended flour/micronutrient powder (MNP) — to widen rural access to these nutritious products. The project gave direct technical assistance and business support to clients with the most potential to fortify, which ultimately increased the flow of fortified products into the marketplace.
In Tanzania, children are especially vulnerable to malnutrition: 42 percent of the country’s children under age five suffer from stunting, anemia, and other micronutrient deficiencies. The project gave Tanzanians new tools to combat this, including a home fortification product called Virutubishi—a micronutrient supplement specially formulated for children aged six months to five years to improve growth and development—and dosifiers, a specially adapted machine to add micronutrients to maize flour being milled in rural areas.
Highlights from Tuboreshe Chakula include:
The four-year project worked intensively with 733 millers and processors to implement good manufacturing practices improve financial management, and introduce new technologies. By the end of 2014, these clients had increased their monthly production of fortified maize meal an average 166 percent to 1,276 metric tons.
In addition, Tuboreshe Chakula fostered public-private partnerships to distribute more than 2 million sachets of Virutubishi and organized regional media campaigns to promote widespread use of all fortified products.
