Mobilizing Against Zika

Zika — an unpredictable and opportunistic virus — requires fast and effective cross-disciplinary action. Abt Associates mobilizes public health practitioners, epidemiologists, economists, climate scientists, communications teams, and technology experts to deliver powerful solutions.

Abt knows the languages, health systems, and cultures of the places vulnerable to the Zika virus. And we have a long history of high-impact results in the disciplines needed to combat Zika, including reducing malaria transmission, mapping private sector health resources, and monitoring pandemic disease outbreaks.

Abt’s Zika experience includes:
  • Helping USAID enhance mosquito-control programs Latin America and the Caribbean through the new Zika AIRS Project (ZAP);
  • Conducting rapid assessments to determine critical strengths and weaknesses in the Zika-fighting capacity of the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, and Honduras;
  • Conducting surveys on knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs of Zika virus and preventive actions among pregnant women in the U.S.;
  • Carrying out on vector control and entomological monitoring of mosquitoes while researching the environmental conditions for Zika transmission; and
  • Adding Zika strategies to existing work with pregnant women in Haiti – including a communications push to prevent Zika transmission – and deepening our public health partnership with the Haitian government.
