Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
MTI responds to the important goal of reaching minority men who have sex with men (MSM) and providing them HIV testing and linkage to care. This three-year project, begun in 2011, has three main objectives: (1) identify 3,000 previously undiagnosed HIV-positive MSM (with a concentration on minority men); (2) link at least 85 percent of newly diagnosed MSM into HIV medical care; and (3) report and document findings and best practices. Abt Associates and its partners—Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, other academic and research institutions, and community-based organizations nationwide—are using five distinct and innovative approaches to reach untested and underserved men: an enhanced venue-based testing strategy; in-home Internet-based HIV testing; a couples HIV counseling and testing component; a social network strategy; and large-scale community testing events. Project findings will inform CDC policy/program development and guide future HIV testing initiatives.
